For the longest time I didn't like Rage because some kids I didn't like in high school REALLY liked Rage. Pretty sure they went on to be young Republicans, go figure.
I recently picked up Little Earthquakes on vinyl. So good. I wasn't a big fan of Tori back in the day but I've grown to appreciate her a lot more as I got older. Especially after seeing her in concert.
Wow interesting! They became the very machine they once raged against lol
I’ve disliked music for that exact reason before. All the rich kids at my high school loved Radiohead. It annoyed me because Radiohead is very complainy in the early albums and I was like “what the heck are you complaining about? Did your Range Rover get a flat tire?”
Tori Amos’ album was soul-moving. But to me it’s like thinking of my favorite food - I could say cereal because I eat it every day, or I could say like a Michelin-star restaurant because it’s the best. But I could never eat Michelin star every day, I’d go broke and feel terrible because it’s so rich and decadent - that’s Tori Amos to me so far
Yessss I was hoping you’d see this! Nothing out of bounds, these sound awesome. This might be a 3-parter. Probably could be like 12 but I want to make it back to the present day eventually lol
The 2011 REM retrospective “Part Lies,Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage” is definitely a better greatest hits compilation….personally the Out of Time/Automatic era suffers from oversaturation for me…could happily never hear Everybody Hurts again!!
Exactly! I never considered that some compilations could be better than others - the best songs are the best songs, I thought - but it makes perfect sense.
Everybody Hurts was tolerable only in my car where I can turn the treble down as far as it can go. The vocals on that song occupies the same brain-rattling frequencies as Dylan’s harmonica when you listen to a non-remastered version on modern headphones. But I love REM enough to get past it now!
From this list, the Tori Amos record is my favorite. It's her best album and has the right mix of deep introspection and pop hooks. Her lyrics are clearer than in some of her future works and her voice...quite beautiful! I remember when this album came out some people were comparing her to Kate Bush. They're definitely in their own lanes but I still hear some of the vocal connections.
It certainly is beautiful. I have trouble playing albums like that often because I found it so emotionally dense. But that’s just a sign of how great the songwriting is, and it’s on my list of albums to revisit later. I’ll keep that comparison in mind next time I listen to Kate Bush as well!
Used to buy cut out bin CDs sometimes as a teen because they were cheaper. I wound up with a couple of REM albums that way and found them hard to get into at the time aside from the singles. I also appreciate them more now too.
Sade and Tori’s releases shaped my early adulthood. As a 10 yo girl taking classical piano lessons, I never would have imagined a future where that passionate, classically-influenced sound would end up a pop sensation. Maybe I would have stuck with the lessons had I known! That said, Sade had an even bigger impact on 23 year-old me. The seductive voice mixed with nature-inspired (IMHO) grooves transported me.

FWIW, I was the other way around. Super into Rage, and mildly annoyed by Tori Amos. With time, I've really grown to appreciate her work.
'92 was another incredible year for new music! We didn't want for anything!
I would add:
Jawbreaker- Bivouac
Sugar-Copper Blue
Chris Bell- I Am the Cosmos
Buffalo Tom- Let Me Come Over
Lush-Spooky
Curve-Doppelganger (sp?)
Probably out of bounds, but if soundtracks are legal, I'd add the one for "Singles" here as well.

Lol. Maybe hold the line at, say, 11 then. :)
